Do you feel sad, down or blue most of the time?
Have you lost interest or pleasure in things you used to enjoy? Do you feel fatigued, have trouble sleeping, or notice a change in appetite? Do you just feel blah, like you've lost your mojo? These are common symptoms of depression, a problem mood state that can hijack your life and interfere with your happiness and well being.
Many of the people who come to see me experience symptoms of depression due to past or current stressful situations in their lives. Relationship issues, family problems, parenting concerns, aging parents, work difficulties, health issues, separation or divorce, and painful childhood experiences are some of the most common presenting concerns.
There are several different types of depression: major depression, dysthymia (a milder type of depression), seasonal affective disorder, and adjustment disorders. Because depression takes different forms in different people, I tailor my therapeutic approach to your specific needs to make sure you receive the help and support that is best for you.
As an experienced psychologist, I've worked extensively with people of all ages dealing with depression. I understand the pain it brings, the despair and hopelessness that can undermine improvement. And the profound impact it can have on our families and our relationships.
By talking about your feelings with me and exploring and processing your experiences in a gentle, supportive, nonjudgmental environment, we can figure things out together.
Let me bring my clinical experience and expert guidance to help you find relief from depression. To help you get back to feeling like yourself again and living the life you were meant to live.
"I started therapy because I was out of work due to an illness. I was feeling depressed and lonely. When I started with Dr. Zwerdling I immediately felt I was in a warm, comfortable and above all safe environment. Our sessions helped me through some really tough times from my past."
"I was struggling when I came to see Dr. Zwerdling. He helped me to feel comfortable and truly understood what I was going through. He offered suggestions that helped me handle things better. Working with him helped me accept myself and feel more confident."
Feelings of helplessness and hopelessness. A bleak outlook toward the future, like nothing will ever get better, like there’s nothing you can do to improve your situation.
Loss of interest and pleasure in activities. No interest in your usual hobbies, pastimes, social activities, or sex. You just don't feel joy or pleasure in anything.
Appetite or weight changes. Significant weight loss or weight gain—a change of more than 5% of body weight in a month.
Sleep changes. Either trouble falling asleep, waking repeatedly during the night, early morning awakening, or oversleeping.
Anger or irritability. Feelings of agitation and restlessness. You find yourself being impatient and short-tempered, and things gets on your nerves easily.
Loss of energy. Feeling fatigued, sluggish, and physically drained. Your body may feel heavy, like its hard to get anything done, and even small tasks can be exhausting.
Negative view of self. Feelings of worthlessness or guilt. You may criticize yourself harshly for perceived faults and mistakes and imperfections.
Concentration problems. Trouble focusing, making decisions, or remembering things.
Unexplained aches and pains. You may experience more physical discomfort, such as headaches, back pain, aching muscles, and stomach pain.
"I was struggling with depression, anxiety, and lack of self confidence for various reasons, but weekly sessions with Dr. Zwerdling really assured me of who I was, and more importantly who I wanted to become. Although I am not totally 'out of the woods' yet, Dr. Zwerdling is the reason I am on the right path. His attention to detail and commitment to his patients allow him to excel at helping others."
